
The most common and least serious type of traumatic brain injury is called a concussion. A concussion is most often caused by a sudden direct blow or bumps to the head. Anyone from infants to the elderly can get a concussion. Its most common symptom is a headache. This type of injury can be caused by a hit to your body that is strong enough to cause your head to forcefully jerk backward, forwards, or to the side.
Concussions stretch and bruise nerves blood vessels and cause chemical changes in your brain that result in temporary loss of normal brain function. It usually does not cause permanent damage to your brain. Multiple or several concussions may result in structural changes in the brain.
